Basics of botox:

This page will include information on the basics of botox along with the developmen of the product, and most common procedures.

  • Botox is a botulinum neurotoxin product that is approved in over 70 counties that addresses unmet patient needs across a variety of indications (Brin, 2009).

  • The most well known application of Botox injections is for cosmetic purposes, where intramuscular injections of Botox can reduce the appearance of wrinkles (Wang, Yan Ng, 2020).

  • The mechanism of action of Botox produces paralysis of muscles by blocking presynaptic release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction (Lagueny, Burbaud, 1996).

  • In other words, Botox can deliver temporary, reversible and predictable relief in selected spastic muscles to allow normal positioning and functioning (Esquenazi, 2006).

  • Beyond cosmetics, botulinum toxins have been studied to benefit a variety of conditions including neurologic disorders and even in dentistry.
