What clients need to know about botox:

  • Side effects vary and are site-dependent.

  • pain/bruising at the injection site.

  • headache, face pain, eye swelling.

  • skin rash/allergic reaction.

  • local muscle weakness/paralysis of the face.

  • irregular heartbeat/chest pain.

  • Difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing can occur if the toxin is not administered correctly(Gov of Canada 2015)

Things to consider: 

  • Qualified professional.

  • Should have a consultation to identify risks, and what treatment hopes to fix.

  • Ask health care provider if there are alternatives.

  • Cost, how much. And will insurance cover it (Srivastava, Kharbanda, Shah 2015).

Basics:

  • Injection: Botox is injected into the targeted muscles around the jaw. 

  • Duration: The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes or less. 

  • Results: The effects usually last for three to six months, after which another treatment may be needed(Gov of Canada 2015).
